ACTING AS DISASTER

6 WEEKS : Saturdays, April 7 to May 12  /  2pm - 5pm  *  SOLD OUT !!

Teacher: Meera Rohit Kumbhani & Tim Reid

230.00

We will bring in texts and plays by Chekhov, Pinter, Tennessee Williams, and others and interrogate the ways scripts are approached and brought into a rehearsal room. How can we take from those approaches, exaggerate and subvert them, slam them against a wall, and see what spills out? How can we find and exalt the role of the actor, especially the one who always exceeds the role they are given? This is still about serving plots, serving characters, serving the surmised designs of playwrights and directors, present and absent, alive and dead, serving the cultural institution of theater, and perhaps serving ourselves and a hyperawareness of the reality of self in every moment. And perhaps, by serving that so committedly, our world becomes unrecognizable and we find ourselves transformed.

The Idiot Workshop is a meeting place for performers, comedians, dancers, artists, musicians, and others who are looking for the thing. It is a place to be surprised.

Rather than beginning with the basics, stepping in gently, building little by little, we start by throwing you into the deep end. There is no ceiling.

We help to develop and refine your voice, a voice driven by you, an individual, not a character so much as a heightened sort of self, your sense of play and absurdity, where you remain grounded in who you are, in ways that are known and unknown. There are no rules.

Access the unconscious, illogical, nonsensical, absurd place of movement, speech, being, and play. We look for corporeal logic. And we learn the most when we are having fun, when we get lost in the fun, and discover ourselves somewhere else.
